Quorn Fishless Fingers

Quorn have recently been making an effort to cater to their vegan fans. With their rapidly expanding range suggesting that this new venture has been rather popular! This is unsurprising due to the demand for it, and I’m certain that there was a petition floating about at one point…

The latest addition to the vegan Quorn range, is ‘Fishless Fingers’. Now, to say that I was excited when I heard this news, is an understatement. I have never been a big fan of fish, the smell normally put me off it. Despite this, I do still get the occasional craving for fish fingers with lashings of tomato sauce… These cravings were finally sated thanks to the good people at Quorn, because, after many years of longing, Fishless Fingers have become available in my local Tesco!

I didn’t really know what to expect from the taste or texture. Would the Quorn Fishless Fish have a flaky fish finger texture? Or would it be more of a traditional Quorn texture? Well, the answer to the question on everyone’s mind, it was a bit of a mixed texture. Flakier than regular Quorn, but definitely not as flaky as actual fish fingers. This worked well in my opinion, because I always found fish fingers to be too flimsy to enjoy fully, falling apart before you even got to munch them!

The taste was another potential concern for me. What if it tasted too fishy and I couldn’t even manage a single finger? Or what if it just tasted like regular Quorn, which of course would be pleasant, but far from what I want from Fishless Fingers. All of this, and more, was going through my mind as I removed them from the oven. I prepared myself for the first bite—the moment of truth so to speak. And reader, I was not disappointed. They tasted brilliant, the fishy flavour was subtle and not overt, instead it tasted deliciously like a real fish finger, only better! The breadcrumbs were perfect and stayed on the fingers, they were crisp and had a good flavour to them, being more than just a crumbly decoration!

I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed these Quorn Fishless Fingers and I look forward to having them again!

Garlic and Ginger Cauliflower Rice - M&S

One of my favourite things about January, other than the lovely weather, is the abundance of new products out. Yes, this influx may be driven by the diet culture which I so loathe, but alas I cannot grumble too much because most new foods tend to be vegan friendly.

Whilst mooching around M&S I couldn’t help but spot this Garlic and Ginger Cauliflower Rice in the stir fry aisle. I’ve heard a lot about cauliflower rice this past twelve months, but I’ve never really wanted to try it, maybe it is the whole concept of faux carbs that freaks me out, I don’t know, but I’m always open to trying new things. Okay, this may not be necessarily true but for the sake of this post can we pretend it is?
The rice is quite pretty, bejewelled with various vegetables like carrots and peppers. This colourful addition provides a lot more than aesthetic value though, they add a nice flavour to the rice and a bit of variation in texture. The texture of the cauliflower isn’t particularly rice like if I’m honest, it’s more like quinoa because it still has a crunch to it. This unexpected texture is far from a bad thing though, I think that I preferred it to regular rice.

The cauliflower flavour was very subtle, and nowhere near as strong as I’d imagined. This worked well with the strong garlic flavour which was well distributed, I love garlic so this was great for me! The addition of the ginger was interesting. Initially, I was put off by the ginger as I’m not a big fan of it in savoury things, but I was pleasantly surprised! I loved the flavour, it was mild and simply added a bit of a kick at the end of each mouthful.
I think that this would be perfect with a Thai curry or even with some stir fried vegetables on top with tofu. I may be getting ahead of myself with all of this but I am definitely a cauliflower rice convert! Never did I expect to enjoy faux carbs so much, but alas I thoroughly enjoyed this.

McVities Mini Gingerbread Men

The year of 2017 has arrived, and I faithful readers, have returned. Life has been a little on the chaotic side the last couple of months and as a result this beloved blog of mine seems to have fallen a little by the wayside. But that is about to changeor I am at least determined to re-dedicate myself to this blog.

I could bore you all with the details of my life since September, but nothing particularly exciting has happened (well I did turn 21, start university, and quite unexpectedly grow another inch taller).
I shan’t prattle on with all the clichĂ©s of, ‘new year, new me’, or any other such rubbish either. There shall be no miraculous epiphany which conveniently comes about on January 1st every single year, despite what we have all become accustomed to, what with the inescapable presence of social media. Perhaps I should stay true to my word and finally get on to the review?

McVitie's Gingerbread Men

I've recently noticed that I have been getting quite bored of what I eat. Finding eating to be a chore again rather than an enjoyable experience. I knew that I had to do something to remedy this, and fast! McVitie's are generally a reliable brand, playing a vital role during my childhood. They provided the chocolate digestives to dip into my tea...
I decided to go with something sweet rather than savoury because as you will have noticed from my reviews, I have quite a sweet tooth! I spotted these little McVitie's Ginger Bread Men whilst doing my weekly shop and I was overjoyed to realise that they were in fact vegan. They stood out to me with their bright packaging and snazzy little design of gingerbread men doing various activities.

The Ginger Bread Men from the good old people at McVitie's, come in little individual packs. This way they are perfectly sized to satisfy your cravings. The serving size is rather good, you get quite a few of these cute little Gingerbread Men in the bag, I was certainly impressed! The flavour is very good, sweet with enough ginger to add spice without being overwhelming. The biscuits were crunchy, as one would expect from McVitie's, so I certainly can't complain. They are incredibly moreish though, I couldn't help myself from reaching for another little man before I had even chomped through the first one! It is definitely a good thing then that McVitie's had the foresight to pre-portion these, or there would be a serious risk of me eating the entire pack in one go otherwise!
